Catching up with the meerkat pups

by Tswalu Kalahari on Sun, October 27, 2013 in Meerkats, News,

When I went on leave, it was heartbreaking to leave the meerkat pups just a day after they had surfaced from their burrow for the very first time. But it certainly made my return to Tswalu all the more exciting and it was interesting to see how much they had grown in such a short space of time.

Meerkat pups 1After four weeks out in the world all four pups are looking strong and healthy. They are about two months old now and already have started digging ferociously for food, although they’ve not had any success yet. However they are persistent and strong-willed which are two characteristics that will get them far in the harsh world of the Kalahari.

Meerkat pups 2One of the pups is rather more independent and courageous than the other three pups and was happy to approach me on his very first day out in the world without hesitation. He definitely displays alpha male characteristics and I am certain that he will one day father a colony of his own.
