Tswalu is an isolated reserve with no communities immediately adjacent to the property, apart from the neighbouring commercial farmers. The nearest towns are Deben (90km) and Kuruman (120km). It is from these two settlements that many staff originate. The majority of the staff have, however, grown up on the remote farms that now make up the Tswalu Kalahari.

The Tswalu community consists of almost 140 staff and their families. The levels of illiteracy were disturbingly high at Tswalu's inception and Tswalu has thus focused on this and a number of other health issues which can have a direct influence on the upliftment and wellbeing of our resident community.
