Desert Rain

Last night we saw 46mm of rain in one sustained downpour, which brings our seasonal total here at Tswalu to levels considerably above the norm. As a result, the bush is in spectacular condition and grasses have flourished, growing to an almost unprecedented height. Driving around the reserve, sometimes all you can see of an adult warthog are its alert ears and then its erect tail as it runs away. Every year at Tswalu we have an Open Day for neighbouring farmers to explain our conservation vision and all the work that goes into it. Last year, one of them told me what he thought; “You have the easiest job in the world - all you do is grow grass!” I’m not sure that’s fair, but it’s great to see the staple vegetation in such a vigorous state.
