Tswalu Kalahari Reserve is the largest privately-owned safari in South Africa. It covers 10,000 square of land on the edge of the mysterious desert wilderness along the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. Accommodating 32 guests at most, the Reserve is composed of seven Motse Lodges and one Tarkuni Lodge.
The word "Tswalu" is a Tswana word meaning "new beginning". The Reserve offers the perfect opportunity to observe many endangered animals in their natural habitat. Nicky Oppenheimer, who is the heir of De Beers, purchased Tswalu Kalahari Reserve in 1999. The overall goal is to make Tswalu one of the premier wildlife destinations in South Africa. Aiming at restoring the natural habitat of Kalahari, the Reserve has introduced local wildlife, such as Kalahari lions, desert black rhino, sable and rhone antelope.
